Altadore, A Little bit More

Altadore is a neighborhood in southwest Calgary, Alberta. Located just south of the South Calgary neighborhood, this area is bordered by the Elbow River to the south and 14th Street and Crowchild Trail expressway to the west and east, respectively. Established in 1945, it has seen a significant amount of recent revitalization, being named as one of Calgary’s top neighborhoods in 2010. Altadore has joined with a network of four neighborhoods in the Marda Loop Area, which are served by an active community association (Marda Loop Community Association) with its community center in neighboring South Calgary.

 

Altadore boasts a vibrant cultural scene, owing to its eclectic mix of renovated mid-century homes and high-end, luxury moderns, built within the last decade. This area’s recent gentrification has led to a substantial increase in higher income housing, as well as a younger median population. New families are drawn to the neighborhood’s great recreational and educational opportunities. Older, single-family dwellings are giving way to modern condominiums in certain areas of the neighborhood, leading to a slight increase in Altadore’s population density of 3,140 citizens per square kilometer as of the 2012 census. This translates to just over 9,000 residents spread over half as many individual dwellings. 

RECREATION

This metropolitan residential block enjoys easy access to Marda Loop, an esteemed outdoor shopping district with over 100 cafes, restaurants, boutiques and various shops. The annual Marda Loop Justice Film Festival is held each November, featuring justice-themed documentaries and films. A summer celebration, the annual “Marda Gras” street festival is held each August. River Park, along the banks of the Elbow River, includes a large off-leash area for dog owners and one of the city’s most pristine green spaces. Nearby Sandy Park extends the total park size to almost 55 hectares, with bike paths, playgrounds, non-motorized river boat access, and picnic areas complete with bathrooms and barbecue stands. The neighborhood also features an outdoor pool, indoor/outdoor skating rinks, yoga centers, tennis courts, a curling rink, and two separate golf courses. The heart of Downtown Calgary is just a short distance to the north, at around 5 kilometers by car or by foot.

EDUCATION

Great schools add to the recent influx of younger families in this neighborhood. Altadore has one public elementary school (Altadore Elementary) and several private schools. The Calgary Waldorf School and the Glenmore Christian Academy serve the private education sector, while older children in the public school sector attend Mount Royal Junior High and Central Memorial High School.

 

SERVICES

As a part of the largest city in Alberta, the Altadore neighborhood benefits from several of Calgary’s municipal strengths. One of Canada’s largest transportation hubs, Calgary International Airport, serves the area. The airport is about a 25 kilometer drive to the north. The C-Train light rail network also serves the area. The proximity to fantastic healthcare is also a large draw for the area, with four major adult hospitals and one major pediatric specialty site. Calgary is also an increasingly large political hub in the area.
